Why the map exists
Tools ship weekly. Names blur. These seven layers answer different questions so you do not treat ChatGPT, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code as interchangeable “AI.”
The AI is the intelligence. How it works with you decides what it can do. What it connects to decides what it can reach. Methods make it repeatable. How much it does on its own sets its share of the work. You remain responsible for the result.

How to use it on Agent Watch
- Start with the job (use case) or a worked example.
- Place the product on the map: how it works with you, what it can connect to, how much it does on its own.
- Only then compare plan price and platform.
How it works with you (in one line)
- You ask, it answers (Chat) — helps you think; you act.
- It does several steps, you review (Cowork) — works through several steps; you review.
- It works directly in your files (Code) — works on files inside rules; you remain on call. Mostly for technical users.
How much it does on its own (in one line)
- Helps you think (Assist) — AI helps you think; you decide.
- Does several steps, you check (Augment) — AI carries several steps; you review.
- Works on its own within your rules (Adapt) — AI works more independently inside clear rules; you can stop it.
Before AI changes important work, keep a backup and a record: save versions, try changes on a copy, and review before anything is final.
